TECHNIQUES for Doc's Best Copper Cement Dr. Fraser Literature Review A Sterile Field Beneath Modern Day Restorations |
Abstract presented at AADR, Orlando, March 2006 Prosthodontics, 2006 - Treating Aggressive Caries Direct Pulp Cap Technique for Doc's Best For several months I have successfully treated patients having deep caries involvement with indirect pulp cap treatment using the Copalite Varnish + Doc's Best White Copper Cement powder slurry mix(Cu Seal by Copalite), then placed a thick base of the Doc's Best Copper Cement. I have used composite to complete the restoration. One Saturday at home, I was chewing a caramel. The entire large restoration on tooth #31 came out. I was in such pain. I drove to my office and treated myself. I mixed the COPALITE Varnish and 1/4 scoop of the Doc's Best White Copper Cement powder. I placed 5 slurry coats on my painful tooth. This was all performed without anesthesia. I next mixed a thick mix of the Doc's Best Copper Cement and placed it in the tooth. What was initially thought to be a tooth needing a root canal, there is still no problem with the tooth and no need for endodontic(root canal)therapy after several months. I am recommending use of these products to all of my colleagues. I call it "Magic Coats" because I have witnessed these products saving teeth where otherwise thay would have needed root canal therapy or extraction. Byung Chul Kim, DDS, Los Angeles, CA, March, 2006 Tooth #14 had a ditching amalgam with recurrent decay. The filling was removed and during the procedure, the pulp was accidentally nicked. A light-cured base and composite filling was placed. I was told that I may need a root canal. For three months I suffered an increasing degree of pain from this tooth. I couldn't eat, sleep, or breath in air due to the tooth's sensitivity. Dr. Tim Fraser was recommended by a family friend. Dr. Fraser removed the direct bonded base and composite. The tooth immediately filled with blood. Dr. Fraser placed five coats of Cu Seal by Copalite (Doc's Best Copper Cement powder + COPALITE varnish mixture) over the pulp and a thick Doc's Best Red Copper Cement base as a sedative filling. That treatment was now 14 months ago. Once the anesthesia wore off, I did not experience any further pain. A current X-ray of the tooth indicates the tooth is vital with no calcification of the canals. I have been a dental assiatant for 20 years. I have never seen a product work on direct pulp capping like Cu Seal and Doc's Best Cement. Pamela Wade, CDA, Reno, NV, June, 2006 Steril Med Dental Unit Water Line Cartridge System: Our office has tried a number of different ways to control biofilm in our waterlines over the past several years. To get acceptable results required complicated steps, were unsuccessful or provided only short term success. Dr. Tim Fraser suggested that we try his Steril Med Cartridge. WOW! Off site water testing by a major university showed 5 of 6 water sources to be free of organisms. The only source with any culturable organisms (32 CFU/ml) was well within acceptable limit of 500 CFU/ml. Thanks Tim. Randall J. Iwasiuk, DDS, MS, Reno, NV, November 2005 |

| Biofilm Busting Fillings Today, more than ever, patients chose esthetically pleasing composite restorations over traditional amalgam restorations. With the increasing use of esthetic fillings, dentists are faced with an increase in post-operative sensitivity, recurrent decay, and failed root canal treatments. There are several proposed methods to decrease the problems associated with esthetic restorations including self-etcheing primer-resin cements and glass ionomer bases. Our solution for overcoming these problems is the use of a germicidial base, copper zinc phosphate cement. Only copper zinc phospate cement has the potentcy to destroy the oral biofilm. While other solutions exist, the use of copper zinc phosphate cement shows promising results. In a study performed by Terry Donovan, restorations cemented using a zinc phosphate cement showed a 95.4% suvival rate, with 45% of the restorations lasting up to 52 years. Important factors in the success of zinc phosphate cement are its ability to pentrate the dentinal tubules and destroy the oral biofilm. Copper-based cements are not a new concept. The use of red copper cement dates back to the 1870's when Dr. John Henry Holliday (aka Doc Holliday) used red copper cement to place a gold swagged crown over the carious molar of a six-year old girl. Reportedly this crown was still in place in when the patient turned 102 in 1967. Unfortunately, at this time, dentists were using pure copper cements (97% cupric oxide) that proved to be toxic. Fortunately, research shows that the 2% copper cements were as or more effective than 97% copper cements and 2% copper cements were less toxic. The reason a lower concentration of copper proved to be effective relied on the ability of copper cements to disrupt the oral biofilm. The porous nature of natural teeth and many dental restorative materials provide surfaces ideal for biofilm attachment. For a germicidal base to be effective it must be able to penetrate the biofilm. Red copper cements are able to break thru the biofilm because they contain galvanically activated copper. Thru the repulsion of silver and iron ions in this galvanically activated system, copper ions are able to bust thru the biofilm and remain active in the dentinal tubules destroying bacteria. Conclusion In the search for new and improved solutions for old problems, copper cements offer new hope for the reduction of problems associated with esthetic fillings. Hopefully, this review will prompt dentists to start using copper cements to see the amazing results for themselves. |
